Black Oscar awards maybe gone If you have not heard, Hollywood elite ethnic group that practices African American culture holds an annual event to honor their own. This event is known as the Black Oscar . The Black Oscar has a 25 year tradition and was started because African Americans were ignored for their bodies of work that were produced in Hollywood. This event has a secret board and was held a few weeks before the main stream Oscars. With the rise in African American Oscar nominations and winners, the Black Oscar’s purpose is in question according to Newsweek. Critics claim that the Oscar winning roles are still stereotype roles or comfort images of blacks. For example, the noble slave, anger black male, the sexualized black woman are repeat images to these critics. The roles will not offend nor challenge anyone’s emotions. Although 10 years ago only a hand full of African Americans could get quality work in Hollywood, John Singleton feels times will not role back. He recently stated, "Now, actors like Terrence Howard can get an Oscar nod with their first starring role." That change, Singleton says, will not be undone. "There's no going back to the back of the bus." Time will tell if Singleton is correct but , as for now, he is correct.
